The numbers are extraordinary — humans spend a lot of time waiting in life — waiting in lines, in traffic, on the phone, for a promotion, for a flight, for a diagnosis, for a job opportunity, for a call, for a pandemic to end, for our sale to close, for our fields to grow. Tom Petty even sang, “The waiting is the hardest part.”
Since we spend so much of our lives waiting, what if we embraced it instead of resisted it?
What if we didn’t dread waiting but saw it as an opportunity?
While waiting, we may have the opportunity for something positive, something new. We may be able to practice alternative productivity, to learn something, to take time to process or think, to read, memorize, help someone, reflect or even rest.
How can we get better at waiting?
It begins with an attitude shift, a change of perspective.
If we have to wait, which we will, let’s view it as a positive gift.
