The recycle truck rolled up to my house and the driver pulled a few levers. A giant robotic arm reached out to grab my container and hoisted it up to dump the load. As the driver stared at the machine doing his work, a couple empty plastic bottles spilled out onto the street. He drove on. He didn’t know I was watching.
Years ago, I had one last lunch meeting with a client I had gotten to know well. This respected, international brand leader gave me some parting advice before he got out of the car that day. He said, “Dave, always raise the bar.”
When we go about our business, do we set a new standard of care, attention, creativity, and service? Or do we just try to meet the minimum requirements?
A new year is coming upon us. We may be weary for any number of reasons, some of them even valid, but may we strive to raise the bar. Others DO notice. And raising the bar sets a positive example for others who we may not even know are watching. But they are.
